The July 21 SOFI report estimated 645 million people faced hunger in 2025. Another measure put 2.69 billion people beyond the financial reach of a healthy diet. [1]
FAO’s measurement reference distinguishes dietary-energy insufficiency from experienced food insecurity. The latter asks about constraints such as skipping meals or running out of food. These indicators capture different aspects of access; a person’s diet cannot be described by combining their population totals. [2]
The report examined costs after food leaves the farm: processing, logistics and wholesale contribute to the consumer price. It called for measures including infrastructure and cold chains, while warning that cheaper food alone would not guarantee better nutrition outcomes. [1]
FAO’s Voices of the Hungry project developed protocols for comparing experience-based food insecurity across countries. That makes the survey useful for monitoring access, while keeping it distinct from a priced healthy-food basket or an individual clinical nutrition assessment. [3]
