WHO reported November 4 that 63 countries eliminated at least one neglected tropical disease by June 2026. 1.41 billion people needed interventions in 2024: different indicators and reporting periods. [1]
The agency links fragile progress to concentrated financing: a few donors supplied nearly 80% of external assistance during 2018–2024. Abrupt cuts disrupted treatment, surveillance and vector control, leaving donated medicines at risk of expiry. [1]
The 2021 road map combined disease-specific action with services shared across diseases and greater national ownership. Its targets distinguish prevention, control, elimination and eradication: different endpoints, not a promise that all infections would disappear together. [2]
WHO’s separate 2022 skin-disease framework explains shared services. At least ten neglected diseases can produce visible skin changes before internal damage or disability. Joint case detection, wound care and staff training connect care across conditions. Common reporting systems inform planning; the framework also identifies diagnostic and training-evaluation gaps. [3]
Schistosomiasis shows why treatment and living conditions belong together. WHO describes larvae from freshwater snails penetrating skin during contact with contaminated water. Farming, fishing, household chores and childhood exposure matter. WHO’s approach combines repeated population treatment with safer water, sanitation and snail control; medicine does not remove the environmental route back to infection. [4]
